As many as the diversity of this unique country India is endless, so are its folk art forms. One of the them being Lippan Art. Lippan Art or Lippan Kaam is also known as mud mirror art. With its origins stemming from the Kutch Region of Gujarat , Lippan Art is one of the most glamorous folk art form of India. Lippan comes from the word Lep or lipan where a concoction of the sticky mud from the region and camel dung is used. Primarily these art form originated among the Rabari community which is known to be the pastoral community in the region . Traditional Lippan Art never traced a design before the actual work. The women used to primarily trace out the designs using the mud directly on the walls of their mud making beautiful patterns in turn. Broken pieces of mirror were then stuck on the mud. Sometimes they also used to decorate the inner walls of their houses in the same manner.
The mirrors on the outer walls used to reflect back the harsh sun rays in the arid region of Kutch and thus providing cooler interiors for the residents of those huts with Lippan Kaam on the exteriors. The mirror work on the insides used to act as multiple light sources thus illuminating the entire house from a single source of light. Just like Lippan Art , the folkart forms of India are scientifically significant and are majestic.
Modern Lippan Art has caught the attention of art lovers and anybody who is in love with intricate patterns and shiny walls which glisten their way to the eyes of the beholder. A must attention grabber , Lippan Art is undoubtedly the most glamorous folk art of the country.
